Why your drain keeps clogging — and how to actually end the cycle

Clearing a clog treats the symptom. A clog that returns every few weeks or months has a structural cause — roots, a belly, scale or grease — and finding it is cheaper than clearing the same line forever.

The schedule is the clue

Random, occasional clogs are life. Clogs on a rhythm are a diagnosis: fast returns (days–weeks) suggest a near-total restriction like heavy roots or a collapsed section; seasonal returns often track root growth; slow buildup over months points at grease or scale narrowing the pipe.

Why we discourage chemical cleaners

Caustic drain cleaners rarely dissolve real blockages — they sink into the standing water, generate heat, and sit against the pipe walls. Older metal pipe is damaged by repeated exposure, and the line becomes genuinely hazardous for the next person to open it. A plunger or a proper auger does more with no downside.

What a camera inspection settles

One pass with a camera answers the question clearing never can: what the inside of your pipe actually looks like. Roots at a joint, a sag holding water, scale catching paper, or a break — you watch the footage with us, and the fix matches the finding. Sometimes the answer is “the pipe is fine; the habits aren’t,” and we’ll say that too.

Kitchen lines are their own story

The slow kitchen drain that returns every few months is usually decades of emulsified grease — it coats the whole horizontal run and shrugs off plunging. These lines respond to a proper cleaning of the full run, not another pass with a cheap snake through a hole in the clog.

Ending the cycle

Clear it, camera it, fix the actual cause — once. That sequence costs less over two years than the clear-it-quarterly treadmill most recurring-clog households are on.
