Is a tankless water heater right for your Sonoma County home?
Tankless is a superb technology that gets oversold. The fit test is simple: how you use hot water, what your gas service can feed, and how long you’ll own the house.
Who loves tankless
Households that run out of hot water — big soaking tubs, back-to-back showers, teenagers. Owners planning to stay 10+ years, who collect the long-life payoff. And anyone reclaiming a garage or closet, since a wall-mounted unit frees the floor.
Who should think twice
If your tank meets your needs and your home would need a significant gas line or venting upgrade to feed a tankless unit, the conversion math gets long. A high-quality tank, properly installed, is not a consolation prize — it’s often the right engineering answer.
What a conversion actually involves
Three checks decide the job: gas capacity (a tankless unit can draw 150,000–200,000 BTU — several times a tank’s draw — so meter and line sizing matter), venting path (stainless or PVC depending on type, with its own routing rules), and condensate drainage for high-efficiency models. We verify all three before quoting, which is why our quotes don’t grow mid-job.
The maintenance nobody mentions
Tankless units need a descaling flush every 1–2 years in most of Sonoma County. It’s a modest service visit, and it’s the difference between a unit that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 20+. Skip it and the heat exchanger pays the price.
